Technology: I love it, but I hate it

In an effort not to squelch my motivation to achieve, I spent the evening trying to accomplish one of the chores I REALLY hate - technology. I detest the intricacies of technology. If websites showing you how to do something can't use language a normal human understands than they should translate for those of us who are technologically challenged (and I consider myself above intermediate compared to the average non-IT person)!

The reason I am tackling this is that Lilly got a netbook for Christmas from Santa and I have yet to get it to connect to the internet. I know that it works because she took it to my parent's house and it connected there fine. BUT after staying up until 2:30am on Christmas Eve, and messing with it for over an hour on Christmas Day, I did some research and tried to fix it yet again...

TO NO AVAIL!
I printed instructions from websites where people have asked similar problems, I messed with IP addresses, WAN, LAN, I've connected ethernet cables, reconfigured connections as well as a few other things that I barely understand, and I STILL can't get her computer to connect. It has no reason not to, mine is happily connected to the wi-fi. But it won't - and I am SO frustrated.

Does anyone out there know how to bridge your DSL modem/router to a better router and create a wireless network with a desktop computer that is manually connected because it does not have wi-fi? Yeah, I know, right?
